Common questions about the course and policies

Do I need prior programming experience?

No prior knowledge or programming experience is required. We'll be using BlocklyProp Solo, which is a visual programming environment that makes it easy to get started with coding.

What software do I need for this course?

You'll need BlocklyProp Solo, which is open source software. It will be installed on the desktop computers in the lab (Sciences Lab Building 2060). You're welcome to bring your laptop, but you should install the required software.

Where are the lab sessions held?

Lab sessions are held at Sciences Lab Building 2060 (computer lab) on Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 11:50 PM.

How are grades calculated?

Your final grade is based on: In-class activities and participation (5%), Lab reports and Discussion (45%), Mid-term exam (15%), Final exam (15%), and Project (20%).

When are the exams?

The midterm exam will be on May 7 during regular class time (9:00-10:20 AM). The final exam will be on Wednesday, June 10 at 6:00 PM.

What is the late submission policy?

You are allowed ONLY ONE LATE SUBMISSION of any assignment within two days after the due date without losing points. After that, you lose 20% of points per day late. Assignments must be submitted within four days after the due date to be considered for grading.

What if I miss an exam due to legitimate reasons?

If you miss an exam for legitimate reasons (medical emergency, medical condition related to pregnancy or COVID-19), you must: (1) give the earliest possible advance notice, and (2) provide information explaining the legitimate reasons. The instructor will determine whether to grant an excused absence and arrange makeup work.

How can I get help with the course material?

You can attend office hours (Dr. Moghimi: Tuesday and Thursday 10:30-11:30 AM, or by appointment; TA: Tuesday TBD), use Piazza for class discussions, or contact the instructors via email.

Where can I find course materials?

All course materials are posted on Canvas. Reading materials and resources are also available there since no textbook is required.

What if I need academic accommodations?

Contact the Student Disability Center (SDC) at sdc.ucdavis.edu, email sdc@ucdavis.edu, or call 530-752-3184. Submit your SDC Letter of Accommodation as soon as possible, ideally within the first two weeks of the course.

How can I request grade re-evaluation?

Any requests for grading re-evaluation/re-grading must come within 7 days of when the grades are posted on Canvas. Requests will not be handled beyond 7 days.

What should I do if I'm struggling with mental health?
